‘Make your Mark’

A petition that aims to celebrate children’s handwriting and safeguard the act of learning to write for children within the curriculum.

The Problem:

Handwriting is at Risk

There has been no specific guidance for handwriting in the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework since 2009’s ‘Gateway to Writing Development’. It’s not visible in the statutory framework. It’s not visible in the Early Years resource materials. The term ‘handwriting’ is not visible.

The Insights:

Handwriting is a part of a child’s colourful originality. It expands their learning and memory. It connects their brain and their body, their identity and their language and connects them to those that surround them.

Nearly everyone alive today made their first marks with a Crayola crayon. Crayola offer the tools (crayons!) to inspire children to express what they’re thinking. They nurture, unleash, and celebrate the originality in every child. Why? Because they believe children have the ability to inspire the world.

For a MP to present a public petition to the House it must have the names and original handwritten signatures of the petitioners.

The Solution:

I designed a petition pack to be sent to children during their transition between playgroup and primary school - Crayola’s very own Early Years Transition Record.

The exploratory visual language is activated across a the interactive petition pack. Envelopes containing cover letters, worksheets, and stickers guide children in their play.

Their handwriting will be projected onto buildings of cultural significance. I’ve made it visible.

I’ve designed a personalised Crayola crayon to nurture the growth of every child that takes part in the petition.

Parents will hear about the campaign with a Spotify TV advert.
